Bullocks
Again in 2012 Tassie’s only working bullock team will be on display at the Royal Hobart Show. Bullocks played a very important role in the development of the early colony. Bullocks were more readily available than horses in the early years and provided the ‘muscle-power’ for many of the colonies early industries.
Horse’s, being more flexible and easier to train, eventually took over a lot of this work before machines eventually replaced them both. However Bullocks were still actively worked until relatively recently when the tradition has all but died out.
However, thanks to Brian Fish and his amazing team of eight bullocks, the tradition has been revived and lives on as a testament to the amazing strength and stamina of these huge beasts. Brian will be demonstrating the team’s skills on the front straight on the NAB Arena at specific times during the show as well as hanging out with Tom, Jerry, Major ……and the rest of team at Bullock World in between shows. Brian loves to talk to children about Bullocks.
Fast fact: A bullock is a steer that is over 4 years old.
