Nurturing our young surf lifesavers...
Our junior activities cater for more than 300 young surf lifesavers in Northern Territory clubs. Commonly known as ‘Nippers’, these members learn all there is to know about staying safe in aquatic environments, especially the beach. They learn about:
- Aquatic safety and surf awareness, including how to survive in rough water and strong currents.
- Surf sports skills, such as how to paddle a board, beach events and swimming.
- Personal development and leadership skills, including teamwork and improving self confidence.
- Looking after the fragile coastal and marine environment.
Making up over one third of our membership, nippers are not only our future but they are our ‘now’.
The minimum age is 5 and the highest age group is for 13 year olds - many of whom are becoming qualified to join the senior lifesavers on beach patrol.
